Bio-optical oceanography is a sub-discipline of oceanography
that concerns itself with the physics of light (optics)
and its interaction with biological and biogeochemical
processes in the ocean. Bio-optical oceanography is the
foundation upon which ocean color remote sensing is based,
and its scope includes the biology of primary productivity
and photosynthesis, the physics of radiative transfer,
and the biogeochemistry of carbon and other elements in
the ocean.
