Estuaries and coastal zones are the interface between ocean and land, and are regions of intense mixing of marine and fresh water. As such, estuaries and coasts are quite dynamic in terms of biologic and geochemical processing of both land and marine constituents. The estuarine and coastal chemistry projects at OPAL center on the sources, transformations, trajectories and fates of several bioactive chemicals known to be important to biological productivity and global carbon cycling. We are interested in the effects these systems have on nitrogen cycling, organic carbon transformations and carbonate system dynamics.
