Research on fish behavior and fishing gear technology is aimed at the sustainable utilization of fisheries resources. Techniques include the use of flume tanks, computer simulations, sea trials, underwater video observations, and statistical methods to understand how fish behave near fishing gear and in their natural habitat. This research results in new fishing gear designs and operations to reduce bycatch, discards and the impact of fishing on the seabed and other marine resources.
