Physical oceanography is the study of the ocean’s waves, currents, heat content, and density. Research addresses questions such as: How does the coastal current flowing along the shelf modify the circulation inside a large estuary? How does the circulation and stratification in the Gulf of Maine affect plankton distributions? Other research is aimed at the development of ocean observing technologies for measuring air-sea gas exchange.
